Janet Hernandez
Graduate Student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program

Janet brings a collaborative, exploratory and creative approach to counseling, fostering a supportive environment where clients can engage with challenges in new, meaningful ways. Her work emphasizes authenticity, empathy, and a holistic view of each individual.
She is currently a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she is completing her clinical training. Janet also holds certification in Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Advertising with a minor concentration in Psychology and Anthropology from the University of Florida, where she developed an early interest in the psychology behind advertising, imagery, and visual communication. This background contributed to her interest in understanding the underlying motivations that shape human behaviors. It also provided valuable insight into how individuals respond to messaging, culture and the environment, ultimately guiding her toward using this knowledge to support healing and well-being.
Her professional background includes providing support through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and facilitating tutoring and mentorship community programs for underserved youth. In her clinical work, Janet supports individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief and more generally, life’s challenging transitions. She utilizes an integrative approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as Humanistic, Attachment-based, and Existential perspectives. This approach allows her to support clients in developing practical coping strategies while also exploring deeper aspects of identity, meaning, and human connection.
Janet has a growing interest in working with issues related to intimacy, sexuality, and relationships, including sexual functioning, gender identity, kink-informed care, and alternative relationship structures. She is committed to providing an open, nonjudgmental and informed space for clients navigating the evolving landscape of human sexuality.
